Get planting – Young Wildlife Heroes

Now is a great time for young gardeners to get out into the garden and plant some seeds or baby plants. If you love wildlife as much as us, you can choose cleverly and plant a feast for the butterflies and bees with lovely nectar-rich flowers that will actually attract more awesome minibeasts into your garden.

Butterflies and bees are pollinators which means they need to sip nectar and pollen to survive. As they fly from flower to flower, they pollinate them which means the flowers can then produce seeds and fruit. In turn this means you will have a better harvest of flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables in your garden.

Butterflies and bees really love wildflowers such as clover, poppies, daisies and borage and you can buy a special mix from our garden centre that is really easy to grow. Just rake over the soil and remove any weeds then shake the seeds over the whole area and put your feet up and let the magic begin. Once the flowers begin to open, we guarantee you will see lots and lots of flying creatures happily settle on the blooms.

If you don’t want a mixture of flowers, you could select individual blooms that you like from packets or choose the seedlings or potted plants from our shelves. Butterflies and bees LOVE foxgloves, sunflowers, roses, lavender, echinacea and buddleia in particular but they will be attracted to anything with an open flower.

Another really great thing about wanting to attract wildlife into your garden is that you don’t need to remove all the weeds once the flowers get growing. Insects thrive on all sorts of plants and they are the heroes of our garden so if you can leave nature to take over, you will reap the rewards.
