The Grovewell 5 Year Hardy Plant Guarantee
As members of the Garden Centre Association you can be rest assured that you are buying top quality plants. Our plants come from the finest growers and have been cared for by experts until the moment it leaves the garden centre. We are confident that your plant purchase will thrive in your garden but with the uncertainties of nature, sometimes this won’t be the case.
Specimen Plant Aftercare:
- Dig a hole wider than the plant’s container and usually to the same depth. Use a fork to loosen the sides and base of the hole. If it is dry, fill the hole to the top with water and allow it to drain away
- Remove the pot. If the roots are spiralling around the root-ball, gently tease them out. Make sure the hole is sufficiently wide, so that the roots can be laid out as straight as possible
- We strongly recommend using a fungal feed. Mycorrhizal fungi (also called Root grow) ‘supercharges’ roots, boosting nutrient and water uptake. Sprinkle over wet roots and into the hole. Keep separate from fertiliser, which can inhibit the fungi
- Make sure the top of the root-ball is level with the soil, except for clematis which should be planted 5-10cm deeper than that in the pot.
- Backfill with soil then firm gently, by using the heel of your boot to ensure good contact between the roots and the soil. Water thoroughly and top up the soil if it settles and leaves gaps.
- Water thoroughly for the first year while the plant is establishing as specimens take even longer to establish than smaller plants. Soak your plant with a full watering can 1-2 a week. Depending on the time of year and weather conditions this may need to be increased. Be aware that wind and dry weather can dehydrate plants just as quickly as a hot sunny day.
- WATER WELL Water plants thoroughly before planting as dry root-balls are very hard to re-hydrate, even when in the ground. If very dry, remove the pot and submerge the plant in a bucket of water for an hour or so
- KEEP WATERING Water deeply and thoroughly 2-3 times a week during dry spells in summer. As a rough guide, apply at least one full watering can of water each time to soak down to the roots. Plants in pots will require water more often
- MULCH Apply a mulch around the base of the plant with a thick layer of mulch to help retain moisture
